Hi, I'm

Hero / Heading

Staff Product Designer with 13+ years experience working across research, strategy, and execution to get from ambiguous opportunity to high-impact product.

Work from earlier in my career

Portrait of Mandip Randhawa

I'm a product designer who brings clarity to complex, messy product problems. What I care about most is the space between research and execution, where you have a pile of signals, competing priorities, and no obvious answer. That's where I do my best work.

Based in the Greater Toronto Area. Outside of work you can find me with my family and kids, scheming up the next home renovation, documenting travel and family life through video, and trying (with mixed results) to cultivate a green thumb. I love a good book when life slows down enough to allow it.

Where I've worked

Staff Product Designer, Course Hero

2024–2025 · San Francisco (Remote)

Designed Study Tools, Study Space, and Course Planner (AI-assisted surfaces that shifted Course Hero from a one-off homework resource to a semester-long study companion). Shaped the team's product direction, translating competing priorities into OKRs and a roadmap the team executed on.

Staff Product Designer, Shopify

2017–2023 · Toronto (Hybrid)

Longest-tenured designer on Shopify's Marketing Tab. Shaped the surface across 6 years, from early ad integrations through Campaigns, Automations, and Marketing Analytics, partnering closely on Shopify Email's integration into the tab. Work spanned 0→1 design, research synthesis, and data product design across one of Shopify's most cross-functional surfaces.

Product Designer, Kinetic Commerce

2015–2016 · Toronto

Designer on a retail associate companion app for brands including Kiehl's, Aldo, Indigo, and L'Oreal, helping in-store staff look up products, manage customer profiles, and close sales on the floor.

UX/UI Designer, Nascent Digital

2013–2015 · Toronto

Designer across enterprise and consumer projects for clients including TELUS, Heart & Stroke Foundation, eHarmony, and Flickr, spanning mobile apps, responsive web, and multi-role admin dashboards.

UX/UI Designer, Grocers Plus

2013–2014 · Toronto

Owned design end-to-end for a personalized grocery discount app, from concept to MVP.

Education

Bachelor of Design (Honours)

2008–2012 · Toronto

York University / Sheridan College Joint Program in Design

What I'm good at

TL;DR

I turn ambiguous opportunities into focused, high-impact products. I connect research to decisions, design across complex multi-surface systems, and bring cross-functional teams into alignment.

0–1 product design and discovery

Helped shape Shopify Email from an early build-vs-partner decision into a native feature, then led two AI-native study products at Course Hero (Study Tools and Study Space) in 18 months.

Complex, multi-surface systems at scale

Evolved Shopify Campaigns from simple grouping to a full workflow builder with Templates and Automations, while feeding reusable patterns back into Shopify's shared design system for millions of merchants.

Research synthesis and problem framing

Turned a 17-participant, six-month diary study into the Trigger → Goal → Build → Act → Measure → Learn framework that shaped the Marketing Tab's entire strategy.

Cross-functional alignment and facilitation

Facilitated the design sprints that shaped product strategy and roadmaps at both companies, partnering closely with PM, engineering, research, and data science.

How I work

TL;DR

I validate direction before I build, turn research into shared frameworks, build in regular rituals with users and the team, and document the patterns that outlast any one screen.

I validate direction before I build.

Painted-door pages, smoke tests, and structured feature surveys check real intent and prioritize what's worth the team pursuing.

I turn raw research into shared frameworks.

Interviews and diary studies don't move a team on their own, so I convert them into mental models that PM, engineering, and research can all point back to.

I build in regular rituals.

Design sprints get cross-functional teams to a decision, monthly lunch-and-learns keep the team in the room with real users, and open "UX roast" critiques keep the work honest between milestones.

I document the pattern.

For anything complex or multi-surface, I pull out the reusable components and feed them into a shared design system so the next surface doesn't start from zero.

How I use AI in design work

I use AI where it speeds up the parts of design that usually lose momentum, while staying genuinely curious rather than performatively fluent:
